First chapter books for 6- and 7-year-olds who love games

Updated November 7, 2026 · By the Bonus Level Books team

The jump from picture books to chapter books is a big one. Our Level 1 series are written for it: short chapters, simple sentences, plenty of action and a full ending in every book. They work as read-alouds for six-year-olds and as first solo reads for sevens and eights.

Reading them together

Take turns: you read a page, they read a page. Let them choose when to stop, and stop on a cliffhanger so they want to come back. Our free Reading Quest printable makes every 15 minutes count toward the next level. When they're ready for more, step up to our Level 2 books for ages 8 to 12.

Questions parents ask

Can a 6-year-old read these alone?

Some can, many can't yet, and both are fine. Most six-year-olds enjoy them read aloud, and by seven or eight many readers manage them on their own.

Does my child need to play the games?

No. Each book explains what a reader needs to know as it goes.
