Spooky chapter books for 8-year-olds, from silly to shivery

Updated November 7, 2026 · By the Bonus Level Books team

Lots of eight-year-olds love a good scare, as long as it's the fun kind. Our spooky series are scary in the campfire-story sense: creaks, shadows and things that go bump, with nobody hurt on the page and no gore, ever.

They're sorted here from silliest to shiveriest, so you can match the book to your reader.

Shivery: for brave readers 10 to 14

The Village of Borrowed Voices is real folklore horror, built on Japanese yokai legends, for older readers who already love scary stories. We'd hold it back for most eight-year-olds.

Tips for a scared-but-happy reader

Read the first chapter together in daylight. Talk about what's real and what's story. Let them stop and come back later, since a good scary book is still good tomorrow. And if a story keeps them up at night, switch to a funny series for a while. There's no prize for pushing through.
